Turning ideas into (augmented) reality
Layar and Verbeterdebuurt are launching an iPhone app that enables you to see what is going on in the neighborhood around you with the help of Augmented Reality. Thousands of ideas and problems submitted by neighbors are projected right on top of your phone’s camera image.

Layar is one of the biggest mobile stories of the moment; just recently the company received a 10 million euro investment. It’s focus is on ‘augmented reality’ , a new technology that projects digital data points over your real time camera feed. Up until now this was all in a separate app in which you could browse ‘layers’. The new ‘Layar player’ enables third parties, such as Verbeterdebuurt, to integrate Layar functionality directly into their apps.
Verbeterdebuurt
Verbeter-de-buurt (Improve the neighbourhood) is a neighbourhood platform that puts your issues and ideas for the public space on the map. It invites people to improve your neighbourhood en shares your submissions. It offers participants the easiest way to send councils reports over the web, mobile or embeddable widgets. Verbeterdebuurt opens all reports to the public and encourages citizens to view, vote and comment on their neighbourhoods issues. The application has integrated facebook, twitter and hyves functionality so that people can promote their reports. Almost 70% of councils in the Netherlands actively accept the reports of Verbeterdebuurt. If problems or ideas are fixed, a green flag is shown on the map so that people can see their neighborhood getting better, as from today in augmented reality!
